YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Police Department is answering some tough questions Tuesday in the conduct of one of their highest ranking officers and spokesperson, Captain Rod Light.

Our investigative team obtained documents that show Captain Light verbally and physically abused his ex-wife. Captain Rod Light has been with the Yakima Police Department for 28-years and is their number one spokesperson. But his career may be taking a dark turn.

Last Thursday, a person outside of the department filed a complaint against Captain Rod Light. The complaint included recent divorce papers filed by Darla Light. In the divorce papers, she makes some shocking claims.

Darla says when she found out that Officer Light had been carrying on multiple affairs, he threatened her life. She quoted Captain Light, who allegedly said to her, "If you don't quit the one liners, there's going to be a homicide."

Darla also claims when she confronted Captain Light in March about the continuing affairs, he beat her, striking her multiple times on the legs with his fists while they sat on a couch.

"In this case, it's a divorce proceeding," Chief Dominic Rizzi. "And in many divorce proceedings, you're going to get many allegations that are made, some true, some that are not. And without a thorough investigation, we aren't going to know what is or isn't."

This all comes after Detective Geoff Gronewald was fired for releasing confidential information to a potential witness whom he was dating. Which raises questions about the conduct of the Yakima Police Department.

"Is there any concern with corruption inside the Yakima Police Department, with what happened with Detective Gronewald, and now with this Captain Light investigation?" we asked.

"No," Yakima City Manager Tony O'Rourke said. "I mean we have a very professional police department. One hundred fifty uniform officers, another forty to fifty civilians. Among a population of that size, you're always going to have personal problems and issues. We're dealing with it."

"Overall, our officers are absolutely moral ethical and do their job," Chief Rizzi said. "They live in the city, they live in this area they protect them, they are members of the community."

These are unsettling private allegations about a man who lives a very public life.

The Kennewick Police Department will be conducting the investigation. In the meantime, Captain Light has been placed on administrative leave. I reached out to Captain Rod Light for comment but he did not return my call.
