PROSSER, WA - Whether you voted for it or not, marijuana stores are now open in Washington.
The only licensed store in our region to open Tuesday saw a long line of eager customers. Temperatures hitting triple digits did not stop people from waiting in long lines at Altitude in Prosser. They even had to pass out water bottles to keep waiting customers cool.
The store looks and sounds like it could almost be an Apple store. The product does not smell anything like an iPod. Although, like a genius, helpful “Cannabis Coaches” guide you into the store and straight to the product.
"You can't be mad at a wait for something that's been a long, long time coming. Many people have been obsessed with this and so a couple more minutes wont hurt," said Robert Olson as he patiently waited in line.
Olson helped vote Initiative 502 into law two years ago. He says the pricpriceyt after taxes does not turn him away. He likes the safe and monitored environment at the store that the black market is lacking.
"You get somebody that's lab tested it, you don't get mites, you don't have mold, you don't have any of these particulates that can be harmful to your lungs and your body."
The going price is about $30 a gram at Altitude where they say their products are top-shelf buds. Tuesday the shop let visitors purchase one gram at a time. Hundreds of customers waited outside with the occasional police car nearby making sure business was conducted peacefully. A few protestors with anti-pot signs did not appear to sway the crowd.
"People's values dictate one way, people's traditions dictate one way, their spirituality dictates one way, but the most important thing is that they have a 1st Amendment right to be out there protesting just like we now have a legal right to be here buying marijuana and not go to jail," said Steve Lee, an eager customer.
Tuesday was Altitude’s soft opening. The Prosser on Merlot Drive will be open for a few afternoon hours each day over the next few weeks and will have a grand opening with regularly scheduled hours in late July.
