NEAR RICHLAND, WA - The mediation period continues between the Department of Energy and the state of Washington.

In June, a negotiation period ended with no decisions made on amending the Consent Decree. Now, a month later, Attorney General Bob Ferguson said he remains optimistic. He said the mediation process has been "constructive so far" and while it may seem like it is taking a long time to get anywhere, it is a very complicated matter.

"It's a very serious issue for the health of the community in the Tri-Cities and for our environment. There's really no issue in the state that's more important than the cleanup of Hanford so I'm very focused on making sure we get that done," said Ferguson.

He said in an ideal world the government leaders and his office would be able to find common ground, however it is too soon to say. If they can't figure it out, Ferguson said he is prepared to take the case to federal court.
