Hundreds battling central Washington wildfire

Posted: Updated:

ENTIAT, Wash. (AP) - Several hundred firefighters are working to contain a fire that has burned grass and brush across 28 square miles in central Washington.

The fire in Chelan County near Entiat has threatened more than 200 homes and damaged a few structures.

A spokesman for fire operations, Laurie Dowie, said Friday that residents of about 40 homes have been told to evacuate.

Weekend forecasts call for a prolonged heat wave with temperature forecasts in the triple digits in the inland Northwest, fueling fire concerns.

Another fire that burned about 1 ½ square miles near Spokane, near Ford in Stevens County, stopped growing overnight.

A spokesman for firefighters there, Chuck Turley, says firefighters hope flames don't flare up again during hot, dry conditions expected over the weekend.
