MOSCOW, Idaho—
Former women’s basketball standout, Alyssa Charlston, will continue her basketball career in Europe after signing her first professional contract. Charlston will join Amicale Steinsel, located in Steinsel, Luxembourg.

“I am really excited to continue my basketball career at the professional level while getting to explore Europe,” Charlston said. “I’m so grateful to my coaches, teammates and entire Idaho basketball family for pushing me so I could get this opportunity.”

Amicale Steinsel finished the 2013-14 season sixth in the Luxembourg Total League. The roster is composed of mostly Luxembourgers. Each of the eight teams in the league boast two to three North American players. Charlston will join Lindsay Laur, who played her collegiate basketball at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Canadian Katie Donovan who played three seasons at Illinois State.

“I am absolutely thrilled for Alyssa that she has achieved her goal of playing professional basketball,” Idaho head coach Jon Newlee commented. “Nobody deserves this more than she does, spending the last four years dedicated to becoming the best player she could be. I know she will do great in Europe and continue to represent the Vandals with all the class and style we are accustomed to. I could not be prouder.”

Terms of her contract include housing, transportation, select meals and an undisclosed salary. Luxembourg is a small European country bordered by Belgium to the west and north, Germany to the east and France to the south. Steinsel is located north of Luxembourg City and is two hours from Paris.

“I have always dreamed of playing overseas since I was younger,” Charlston added. “Now that I have signed a contract and it is a done deal it makes it a little easier to accept the fact that I do not get to keep playing at Idaho.”

Charlston finished her career at Idaho after playing in a record 130 consecutive games. She finished fifth all-time in scoring with 1,587 career-points. The Sammamish, Wash., cemented her name in the Idaho record books with 128 blocks (fourth), 855 rebounds (fourth), 601 field goals (fifth), 429 free-throws attempted (seventh), 290 free-throws (ninth), a 36 percent three-point field goal percentage (ninth) and 95 three-pointers (t-10th).

Charlston will join the team in September for the start of the preseason. Amicale’s first regular season game is Oct. 4.
