Pateros Man Helps Save School From Fire

Posted: Updated:
PATEROS, WA - The town of Pateros has hit particularly hard by the Carlton Complex Fire, more than 100 homes have been lost there.

One man risked it all to make sure a school in Pateros remained standing.

The school has become a critical staging area for relief effort but it was almost destroyed itself when flames came within feet of the building, thanks to the heroics of a local man, the school was saved.

The scene in the neighborhood looks pretty bad but it could have been much worse if Augustine Morales didn't jump into action.

"We just put some hoses out and put some water onto the fire and try to help a little bit," he said.

With no firefighters in sight, Augustine and a friend used a hose system on the back of their truck to battle back flames that were reached over his head.

"Everything was going trough my mind because I have my kids and I have to take care of my kids and I'm just thinking if you die I don't know what's going to happen," Morales explained.

Not only did every home miss the huge flames by feet but Augustine helped to save something perhaps even more important to the community, the high school.

"This is the heart of the community and it's not just the high school, this is the high school, this is K through 12," Connie Miller said.

Now the high school has turned into a place where the community can heal with donations consisting of mountains of food, gym filled with clothes and more water bottles than you can count.

"This is our silver lining, this tells you what this community is, what the community, what the communities around us are because it's not just our community, people are coming from all over" said Miller.

Now that he made a difference is the only praise Agustine needs to his courageous act.

"Because I know that I saved something important for everybody for the kids and the kids future."

Volunteers say they plan to give the extra donations to other communities devastated by fire across the state.
