KENNEWICK, WA-  The Kennewick Fire Department is making sure everyone is safe at Water Follies.

The department said anything can happen at these events and that is why they are prepared for anything.  The department is near the pit area to prevent any dangers. The hydroplanes have jet engines and that makes them more flammable.

The firefighters are required to be there just in case fuel or anything else catches on fire during a race.

“Anytime the boats are fueling, we've got people standing by with extinguishers, and we've got all the other equipment down here in case something does get out of hand,” said Kelly Williamson, Kennewick firefighter.

The fire crews have eight workers in the pit, some at their command post, and more on bikes to help with any other emergency.

“If we weren't down here and something happened, it could be a catastrophe.  So, we're down here to make sure that doesn't happen,” said Williamson.

The fire department will be there all weekend and so will medical services.
