SPOKANE, Wash. -

SPOKANE, Wash.- Tuesday evening the Spokane Fire department announced they had a likely cause for the High Drive brush fire: humans.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon about 3pm on the west side of Spokane's South Hill between The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course and High Drive. By 6pm it had grown to 30 acres and moved to within 75 yards of several homes on High Drive. Voluntary evacuations were issued, power was shut off to the area, and fire crews brought in three airplanes to drop water and retardant on the fire.

It took about 100 firefighters from the city of Spokane and the Department of Natural Resources to get the fire contained. But by 10pm Monday night the fire was 100% contained, but fire crews did remain on scene overnight to make sure hot spots didn't flare up.

On Tuesday only six people remained at the fire line, keeping an eye on homes that were once in the path of the fire. Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said they were able to quickly get a hold on the fire due to favorable conditions. There were no homes damage, and no injuries reported.

KHQ talked with several people who live in the area and say there is a fire pit near the area where the brush fire started. They suspect that someone was trying to cook something, and forgot about the fire.

Spokane firefighters could not confirm that, but did say they believe this fire was human caused. Crews will remain on scene until 8am Wednesday morning once again to watch for flare-ups.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE

SPOKANE, Wash.- On Monday afternoon a brush fire broke out on the west side of Spokane's South Hill. The fire, which broke out around PM, was burning on the hill between High Drive and The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course.

By 10 PM Monday night the fire was 100% contained. This does not necessarily mean the fire is totally out, but that crews are confident it won't spread and will be out soon. Fire crews tell us that at its peak the fire was about 30 acres in size. But it was of special concern because at one point it burned to within 75 yards of a line of homes on High Drive. Incredibly there has been no damage to any homes or other structures.

Spokane Fire Chief Bobby Williams tells us he believes that planes dropping fire retardant played a big role in keeping the homes safe. The fire also prompted road closures and voluntary evacuations, however those are all now lifted.

Crews tackled the fire from both the lower part of the slope, at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course, as well as from the top of the bluff on High Drive.

11 firefighters remained on scene through Monday night watching out for hot spots. 20 firefighters will be on scene all day Tuesday looking out for internal burning. The smoke in the air on the South Hill should be pushed out by Tuesday afternoon.

The fire cause is unknown at this time.

WASHINGTON (AP) - A Pentagon spokesman says the U.S. believes the missile launched by North Korea was an intercontinental ballistic missile.      That means that in theory it had enough range to reach portions of U.S. territory. The spokesman, Capt. Jeff Davis, said Friday the missile did not pose a threat to North America but traveled about 1,000 kilometers (about 620 miles) before splashing down in the Sea of Japan.
