Woodward Delivers Complete Game Shutout as Pippins Win 2-0

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA – In the short history of the Yakima Valley Pippins, the franchise had not seen a complete game from a starting pitcher, but Austin Woodward gave the Pippins their first one Sunday evening in a 2-0 win over the Kelowna Falcons at County Stadium.

Woodward tossed all nine innings, allowing just four hits (two on the infield), no runs, 1 walk and 10 strikeouts to pick up improve his record to 3-2, while dropping his ERA from 3.71 to 3.11.

In a scoreless game through four innings, the Pippins (30-18) finally got to Kelowna starter Brandon Lambright in the 5th, drawing two of their 10 walks on the day before Reid Martinez singled home Shawn Wardian to put the Pippins up 1-0.

A sacrifice fly from Wardian in the 6th added the second and final run for Woodward, who never let Kelowna (15-33) get a runner past second base in the victory.

The Pippins extended their winning streak to seven games with the win, their longest of the season. The victory also helped the Pippins tie the 2013 Medford Rogues for most wins by a WCL expansion team in its first season. Yakima Valley will try to set the record Monday night, as the Pippins host the Cowlitz Black Bears for the first of a three-game series at 7:05 p.m.
