RICHLAND, WA- The Lourdes Health Network opened a new mental health counseling center in Richland.

Lourdes Counseling Center officially opened its Transitions center Monday and held public tours.  The center is the only one of its kind in the Tri-Cities and it is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  The counseling center will offer help on a long-term level and until patients are healthy.  The facility officials said it was long overdue.

"We didn't really have a place where people could have their needs met," said Tim Hoekstral, director of Outpatient Services.

The facility wanted to reduce the gap in the mental health care system.

"This is a gap in our mental health system that we can begin to address.  Patients don't have to get sicker before they enter the inpatient unit, they can come here," said the Vice President of Behavioral Health and Physical Clinics Barbara Mead.

The center will also work with law enforcement to help suspects who might have mental illnesses before they go to jail.  They also hope this new facility will help reduce crime in the community.

"The better we respond immediately to crisis needs, that helps the safety and helps build safety in the community," said Hoekstra.

The counseling center will work with patients with various mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, and other problems.  Lourdes is excited to help the community out in a new way.

"We're really excited to be able to help people who are in a mental health crisis who don't really need the level of care, such as an inpatient unit but needs some additional service, and we're really excited to be able to fill that gap," said Manager of Extended Community Service Dana Oatis.

Lourdes Counseling Center has sixteen rooms for patients and transitional services.  For more information, visit their website at www.lourdeshealth.net
