Two brush fires break out in Spokane County; both quickly contained

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash.- On Tuesday afternoon Spokane county fire crews tackled two wildfires on opposite ends of the county.

The first, which was only an acre and a half, broke out in Medical Lake around 2pm. That fire was burning on state land near Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake. Power lines in the area were down, and power to the hospital was out for a short time. Crews say the fire is not contained and they will be on scene into Tuesday night to get this fire completely out. Avista was also on scene helping to restore fire.

A second grass fire broke out just after 3pm in the Nine Mile Falls area on Friendship Lane. This fire was about an acre in size and it is now contained. There are conflicting reports on how this fire started. At one point a home was threatened, but it is now out of any danger.

The Department of Natural Resources responded to both fires and will be monitoring them throughout the evening.
