SPOKANE, Wash. -

Being a teenager is tough these days. Social pressures can have our kids making choices against their better judgment. What if I told you with the right tools, your child can be empowered to live their best life?

In this edition of Keeping Vigil, I'm going to introduce you to the the founder of "Statement."

Jenny Moeller grew up in Moscow, Idaho. She was raised in a good family, had great friends and considered herself a leader, but she had a weakness.

"I was that girl that wanted to date all the bad boys because I was going to fix them. I just had one destructive relationship after another," Moeller said.

One boyfriend almost killed her twice and that’s when she knew change was imminent. After some tumultuous years, Jenny’s life looked brighter. “I ended up marrying a wonderful man and he’s fabulous and we have two great kids now."

I met Jenny because a dear friend, Lauren Thomas wrote me explaining why a story should be done about her.

“She’s like an angel that spreads love. She was a cheerleader and she cheers every single day of her life and I love her,” said Lauren.

Lauren is talking about Jenny and Statement. A non-profit Jenny created to prevent young girls from falling into the same trap as her.

“We just feel it’s important to reach them when they’re in junior high so as they do develop into these dating relationships they are going to first know who they are independently. That’s the main goal,” said Moeller.

Especially because statistics show 1 in 3 teen dating relationships experience physical aggression like hitting, punching, kicking, even slapping.

“If the young women and young men have in their back pocket the tools to recognize abuse and understand what it looks like even on a subtle level they can diminish it before the cycle of domestic violence starts all over again," Moeller told me.

“They just get a mixed message and get desensitized. How do talk to someone appropriately? How do you treat them with respect and value? It’s so common to just have verbal abuse and think that’s just how people talk to each other now. He loves me. That’s just his way."

Statement teaches teen’s more than just signs of abuse.

“We really want to empower them as far as how to goal set effectively, how to put an action plan in place, we really want them to be empowered through leadership and giving back to their community through volunteering”.

It’s a 7- week curriculum named the Red Flag program.

“There’s a lot of pressure about body image now and depression and we touch on those topics too,” Moeller added.

Lauren roots for these young women with a faithful friend by her side. A friend who believes in what the other is doing.

“What if every young child in our community had the opportunity to go to a leadership class and learn what it’s like to spread love instead of receive anger or jealousy?” Thomas asked.

Statement hopes to have a program for young men by Fall.
