Stolen bike didn't roll away unnoticed

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. - When Paul Dannels finished his workout at the Downtown YMCA, he was surprised to see his bike was gone from the bike rack.

"I was pretty upset, to be honest...mad, and discouraged, and depressed because I knew I couldn't replace it," said Dannels.

A reporter for The Inlander happened to be at the YMCA when the bike was stolen.  He took pictures of the bike thief and even though Spokane police were able to arrest him, they could not find the bike.

A non-profit based in Seattle, Washington Bikes, stepped in to fundraiser for a new bike for Paul after hearing this story, which was shared widely throughout Spokane.

They wanted to help Paul because he works so hard to take care of his family, which consists of 4 children.

"Me and my family bike a lot," Paul explained.  "About 30-50 miles each week...we like to spend time outside - that's why we live in Spokane."

Washington Bikes is aiming to raise $1000.  So far, they have raised $535.

And now, Paul has another reason to like living in Spokane.

"I feel pretty positive, and pretty thankful...people really care about other people, and my family, a lot," said Paul.  "Thank you from the bottom of my heart, it means a lot."

If this fundraiser is ultimately successful, Washington Bikes may continue a campaign to raise money for other people like Paul, who had their bikes stolen.

And, especially here in Spokane, this is bound to be much appreciated by so many cyclists.
