KENNEWICK, WA- Teachers are prepared for a new school year but parents can help students get ready mentally.

Teachers are prepared for the school year, but parents preparing their children is just as important.

That is also the case for Eastgate Elementary. The school relocated for this school year into the Fruitland building while their old location gets renovated.

“Our biggest priority is just to make this is a really welcoming environment for the kids when they come back to school,” said Eastgate Elementary counselor Nikki Wood.

To help students adjust to a new building they set up a Hawaiian Survivor theme for the year and parents can help too.

“Prepping their kids for ‘what does it mean to ride the bus, how are you safe on the bus,' and just preparing them for some of the routines for coming back to school,” said Wood.

She said talking to your kids about these things can make them more aware of things that can happen and how to be ready.

Starting a sleep routine before school starts can make the adjustment from summer easier.  Wood said the amount of sleep needed varies depending on the age, but younger kids need more sleep than older kids.

Getting kids adjusted to doing homework may be a bigger task, but 1st grade teacher Amy Pang said parents should start as soon as possible with establishing a homework routine.

“They should just get in the habit of making sure you do it right after school before they get to do fun things like watch television or go outside to play,” said Pang.

Wood said it is the parents' attitude that will determine the child's attitude about the upcoming school year.

“If the parents are enthusiastic about it, rather than nervous and fearful, the kids will pick up on that and tend to be more enthusiastic and prepared when they come,” said Wood.

The Benton Franklin Health District said parents should make sure their child has all the current shots because they could be sent home if their immunization records are not up-to-date.
