USC senior admits his story of heroism was completely made up

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES, Cali.- A fifth year senior at USC went from being praised, to being condemned, all in a matter of hours. On Tuesday Josh Shaw told media outlets he'd injured his ankle after jumping from a second-story window onto a concrete deck to save his nephew from drowning.

24 hours, and multiple phone calls later, Shaw admitted he'd made up the story. USC Head Coach Steve Sarkisian says his team is going to focus on football, and let the authorities worry about the rest.

"We are extremely disappointed in Josh," said USC head football coach Steve Sarkisian. "He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story." Sarkisian also said Shaw, elected a team captain Saturday, has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities.

Shaw's attorney released the following statement on his behalf: "On Saturday August 23, I injured myself in a fall. I made up a story about this fall that was untrue. I was wrong to not tell the truth. I apologize to USC for this action on my part. My USC coaches, the USC Athletic Department, and especially coach Sarkisian have all been supportive of me during my college career and for that, I am very grateful." His attorney went on to say that there is nothing criminal in this matter whatsoever.

SPOKANE, Wash. - It’s a hot, sunny, July day but a pool sits empty in a North Spokane backyard. Neighbors said it’s not worth putting their children’s safety at risk after two teens threw rocks at the kids on Monday. “They didn’t even think twice they just did it,” said one witness.
