Spokane County Sheriff: pair arrested for August burglary spree in north Spokane County

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash.- On Friday the Spokane County Sheriff's office announced deputies had arrested two men they believe are responsible for a number of burglaries in north Spokane County. Deputies say during the month of August they noticed a sharp increase in burglaries in north Spokane County, and quickly spotted a specific pattern. The burglaries were daytime and the burglars stole firearms, prescription medication, jewelry, and money. These are all items that can be quickly sold or traded for money.

The Sheriff's office assigned one detective to the case, with the goal of identifying and arresting the burglars. After reviewing the incident reports, and speaking with neighbors, the detective determined the suspects were 20-year-old Damian A. Zowal and 21-year-old Trevor J. Burzic.

Using this information deputies began following the two men, and say during that time the men committed two burglaries, stealing a firearm in one of them. Deputies moved in Friday, and took the two men into custody in the 11100 block of North Market Road, that's just off the Parksmith interchange on the new North South Freeway.

Both men were interviewed and agreed to cooperate. They told deputies they believe they burglarized 10 to 20 homes in north Spokane County, but deputies believe that number is much higher. In their apartment deputies found many stolen items, but not the firearms. Deputies are still working to locate and recover those. Both Zowal and Burzic told deputies they have an addiction to oxyContin, a powerful narcotic painkiller.

Zowal was booked into Spokane County on two counts of First Degree Burglary and Theft of a Firearm. Burzic was booked into Spokane County Jail on two counts of Residential Burglary. Investigators may also file additional felony charges including Trafficking Stolen Property, Drug Possession, Possession of Stolen Firearms and more.

SPOKANE, Wash. - From the outside, the Repeat Boutique looks like a lot of other thrift shops in Spokane.  Inside, some might describe the stuff for sale as old, used, discarded garbage -- but store manager CJ Curtis sees its potential. And just like the goods in her shop, CJ is on her way to a new life, one far from the one she once lived.

SPOKANE, Wash. - "He told me to pull over, and my jaw just dropped," a Spokane woman, who says a fake police officer tried to pull her over, doesn't want to be named. In fear, this could happen again. "It really scared me and kind of threw me off that night. I don't even want to drive by myself anymore," she said. She tells me that she was driving around North Spokane at night on her way home from work.
