Family of suspected burglar speaks out: 'He needs help and maybe jail will provide that.'

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash.- KHQ uncovered more information about a pair of suspected burglars arrested by Spokane County Sheriff's deputies earlier this month. Deputies say 21-year-old Trever Burzic and 20-year-old Damian Zowal may be responsible for dozens of daytime burglaries in north Spokane, up to ten a day for weeks. The two admitted they'd burglarized between 10 and 20 homes, but investigators believe that number is much higher.

On Wednesday we learned that Zowal and Burzic didn't just target strangers, they also targeted family members. Burzic's uncle, Mike Parker, says he was a victim of their crime spree and he wants to see justice. Parker says, "I don't really care who it is that stole from me, I think they should be prosecuted." Parker says the pair stole thousands of dollars worth of tools and equipment earlier this year. He's glad his nephew's crime spree is over, but Parker says he wants to see Trever get help.

"I would like to see him rehabilitated," Parker says, "but he's grown up this way, he's been in gangs, and it's really hard to pull someone out of that without incarceration. So yes, I hope he goes to jail and hope he gets the help he needs."

Both Trever Burzic and Damian Zowal admitted to detectives they had an addiction to OxyContin, and that addiction fueled much of their crime spree. Detectives say the two were stealing items that could be easily pawned or traded for drugs. Both men are in the Spokane County Jail facing a slew of felony charges.

SPOKANE, Wash. - From the outside, the Repeat Boutique looks like a lot of other thrift shops in Spokane.  Inside, some might describe the stuff for sale as old, used, discarded garbage -- but store manager CJ Curtis sees its potential. And just like the goods in her shop, CJ is on her way to a new life, one far from the one she once lived.

SPOKANE, Wash. - "He told me to pull over, and my jaw just dropped," a Spokane woman, who says a fake police officer tried to pull her over, doesn't want to be named. In fear, this could happen again. "It really scared me and kind of threw me off that night. I don't even want to drive by myself anymore," she said. She tells me that she was driving around North Spokane at night on her way home from work.
