Renovated Ferris High School ready to open doors

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

The $86 million Ferris High School is ready to open its doors to students.

After three years of construction, Spokane Public Schools held an open house to show off the new building. The new school is a far cry from what Ferris used to look like. It is now described as a multi-building campus. These new renovations were only able to happen after a 2009 bond levy was passed, and it was pushed forward as an effort to modernize the school.

"The fields are gorgeous, the buildings are gorgeous, the auditorium. They've done a great job on making sure all the kid's needs are met from academics to athletics," said Tim Herrington who's three daughters are excited to attend the school.

The high school used to be a spread of 20 buildings, but now the two hundred sixty thousand square foot building houses 85 classrooms, a cafeteria, and gymnasium all under one roof.

Faculty describe the school as state of the art, with renovations including smart boards in every class room but also; air conditioning which the previous school did not have, as well as improved energy efficiency and increased security.

Spokane Public Schools Superintendent Shelly Redinger said one building compared to 20 buildings limits the amount of entrances which improves student safety," It's much easier to lock down the facility to account for students when you have all these doors. There's a lot less doors, we can lock down the facility much quicker."

On top of renovations and making the school more modern, it's also been designed so that it can accommodate changing technology.

His brokenhearted family reached out to KHQ's Hayley Guenthner with a letter asking for his case to be featured in our Q6 Cold Case series. The day Paul vanished started out so wonderful. "It was a happy day," said Paul's aunt Georgine Glatt.
