Liberty Lake residents concerned by leak

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. - Liberty Lake residents who live along I-90 could only sit and wait for about 19 hours as agencies at a weigh station along the interstate worked to contain a chemical leak.

Some of those residents told KHQ they were unaware there'd been a leak that started around 1:30 Sunday afternoon until late that night when they turned on the news.

“We were clueless there was something going on that we shouldn't be so close to,” Sherry Sauer said.

Sauer brought her two 3-year-old grandchildren down to the river yesterday in the early evening. She says she smelled ammonia in the air, but thought nothing of it. It wasn't until hours later that she heard there'd been a chemical leak.

“I feel it was negligent that someone didn't come and alert us,” Sauer said.

A reverse 9-1-1 call did go out to residents in the area, but numerous told us today that they never received one.

Authorities had their hands full though as they worked to contain a potentially toxic and highly flammable chemical. Brian Schaeffer of the Spokane Fire Department told KHQ that had the crews not worked methodically and quickly something could have gone wrong that would have been “catastrophic.”

Monday afternoon Spokane Fire said the leak had been entirely cleaned up and is no longer a threat to anyone's health.
