Matt's Action Cam: A T. rex Named Sue

Posted: Updated:

Spokane, Wash. - The most ferocious dinosaur that ever lived is now at the Mobius Science Center, in downtown Spokane.

The exhibit, “A T. rex Named Sue,” features a cast of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered. The 42 foot long, 3,500 pound, model is the keystone piece of this traveling exhibition.

Before Sue became known as the largest and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex fossil, she lived a long life, and when she died her massive body was covered by the fine silt of an ancient river. For millions of years, while continents shifted around her and countless species came and went, Sue lay buried deep within the Black Hills of South Dakota. There she waited until 1990, when fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson, by mere chance, spotted vertebrae sticking out of the bluff face.

A few years later, the Field Museum in Chicago purchased the 67-million-year-old fossil at auction for $8.4 million, setting the world record for the highest price ever paid for a fossil.

Only four T. rex specimens containing more than 60% of their original skeleton have been found. Sue is at least 90% complete - only a foot, one arm, and a few ribs and vertebrae are missing. Because of its near completeness, the specimen has presented the scientific community with a variety of new evidence, including new discoveries about the biology and evolution of Tyrannosaurus rex.

The exhibition, assembled at Mobius Science Center, also features visitor controlled mechanical models, videos, and free-standing interactive exhibits.

The visiting exhibit “A T. rex Named Sue” will run through January 4, 2015. Admission is Free to Mobius Science Center Members, $10 for adults, $7 for children (3 years and under are free). Hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m on Sundays.

The discovery of Sue ranks as one of the most important fossil finds ever, with tremendous educational value for scientists and the general public. Tyrannosaurus rex is the most widely recognized dinosaur in the world. Although it was first named almost a century ago, much remains to be understood about this remarkable animal. Tyrannosaurus rex remains one of the largest flesh-eaters to have ever inhabited the Earth, and still dominates popular perceptions of the Age of Dinosaurs.
