HAUSER LAKE, Idaho- "You've got an 18-year-old young man, everybody was in the environment of entertainment and fun, and things of this nature aren't supposed to happen," says Sergeant Ward Crawford with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.

A little after 10pm Friday night, the sheriff's office received a call that there had been an accident at the "Incredible Corn Maze" at the 3400 block of North Beck Road. When deputies arrived on scene, 18-year-old Jeremy McSpadden had already passed away.

After an investigation, deputies found that McSpadden was participating in an event where a bus full of people drive through the corn maze in a modified school bus and "zombies" come out of the maze and attack the bus. Patrons in the bus shoot at the "zombies" with paintball guns, and McSpadden was playing one of the "zombie" roles.

Deputies say McSpadden had been running towards the rear of the bus when he fell down and was run over by the rear tires. And it wasn't until after the bus cleared the area, and people playing the roles of zombies began to recoup for the next round that they noticed something had gone wrong.

"We interviewed every single person on the bus last night, and almost every report that we got was that nobody recognized a problem, they thought it was a part of the show, zombies attack, you shoot them, they fall down," says Crawford. "And the fact that the bus was going through a corn field with irregular terrain, the rocking of the bus, and other things were also taking place, so the fact that they went over something, didn't alarm anybody."

The Sheriff's Office is currently waiting on an autopsy report to further their investigation, which could take several weeks.

Previous Story:

A high school student from West Valley, working as a role-player in the zombie attraction at the Incredible Corn Maze was tragically killed Friday night when a bus in the attraction struck him. 18-year-old Jeremy T. McSpadden Jr. was significantly injured and died at the scene after the incident happened around 10:30 p.m.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and Kootenai County Fire Rescue were dispatched for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a bus on the property. The corn maze is located at 3404 N. Beck Rd. near Hauser Lake, Idaho. After a preliminary investigation, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office concluded the incident occurred in the "Zombie Slayer Paintball Bus" attraction where people board a bus, essentially a modified school bus, with paintball guns mounted outside the windows, and shoot paintballs at "zombies" who emerge from the maze and other hiding places and "attack" the bus.

McSpadden was performing his role as a zombie and emerged from his hiding spot and ran toward the bus. As he did this, multiple witnesses say he stumbled, falling forward and landed directly in front of the passenger side, rear tire of the bus. He was immediately run over and appears to have been killed instantly. The bus was moving in a forward direction at the time and was described as "creeping along" at a speed that did not even register on the speedometer.

Due to the uneven terrain of the corn field, rocking of the bus is common and nobody was immediately aware of the tragedy that had just occurred. Many of the patrons believed it was just part of the ride. It was not until the bus traveled away from the victim's location and the role players began to reset for the next bus to come along that anyone realized something was wrong.

An autopsy is pending but results will most likely not be available for a couple of weeks.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor and McSpadden's next of kin have been notified.

The Incredible Corn Maze will be closed at least for the rest of the weekend. This statement was posted on their Facebook page:

"We are sorry to announce that all attractions, including the free drive inn movie has been cancelled for the remainder of the weekend. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. Please check back as we will continue to make posts regarding operations. Thank you."
