Dozens removed from Ebola watch list in Texas

Posted: Updated:
KHQ.com - There are signs of progress in the on-going battle against the spread of the Ebola virus in the United States. For the first time Monday, doctors are removing names from the list of people at risk for the virus.

Forty-three people who had contact with Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan before he was hospitalized are no longer on a Centers for Disease Control watch list..

The group includes Duncan's fiancee -- Louise Troh -- and three young men who have been quarantined for 21 days.

Also four school children who were on the list returned to class Monday, and a fifth will be back Tuesday.

"There is no question, today is a milestone day," said Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings.

"It's a hurdle that we needed to get over, but there are other hurdles to also jump."

Seventy-five healthcare workers at Texas Presbyterian Hospital involved with Duncan's treatment, are still self-isolating and self-monitoring right now.

Some of their co-workers made their first public comments Monday as the hospital continues to answer questions about the treatment of their first Ebola patient.

"We know we need to reaffirm the public's trust in us and we are asking our community to stand with us. We will reaffirm your trust," said Dr. Cole Edmonson, the hospital's Chief Nursing Officer.

The two nurses infected while caring for Duncan -- Nina Pham and Amber Vinson -- are in stable condition Monday night.

Doctors say both women are responding well to on-going treatment, but they also warn this is just the beginning of what is a long and difficult process.
