SPOKANE, Wash. -

Colors tend to define the sights of the fall season, but along Corbin Park, it's not just the foliage that flavors the neighborhood.

Dozens of homes have art crafted by Doug Sutherlin, a 75-year-old man who lives along the park and loves art.

Sutherlin has been crafting art for 10 years. His home is also a museum filled with relics of the past and lights that celebrate the changes the world has undergone since Sutherlin's childhood, when World War II forced blackouts.

“It's a celebration of being able to have all the lights I want,” Sutherlin said.

Sutherlin spends hours in his studio everyday, and when he's done with a piece, he gives it away.

More than a dozen neighbors now own artwork from Sutherlin.

“He does it with love,” Patty Bachmeier said. “We all think he's a genius.”

Sutherlin, who identifies as a Catholic Buddhist, says art is to be enjoyed and then passed on. Sutherlin also stresses that he won't be around forever to create art for the community.

The local artist was diagnosed with Leukemia three years ago. His prognosis is uncertain, but Sutherlin seems OK with all of it.

“There is loss in life and we need to accept that,” he said. “It makes me appreciate life more, which I always did.”

That, in the end, is why Sutherlin makes art: To live life to the fullest, embrace his inner-child and perhaps put smiles on a few faces in the process.
