It appears longtime Spokane County Auditor Democrat Vicky Dalton will be serving a fifth term in office as Spokane County's Auditor.

The first count released Tuesday night showed Dalton ahead of challenger Alene Lindstrand by more than 20,000 votes.

The county auditor oversees county elections, records property transactions and other legal documents, issues marriage licenses, provides county vehicle licensing services, and pays Spokane County's bills. It is a 4 year term position with a $88,350 annual salary.

Lindstrand currently serves on the Spokane County Planning Commission and has run a campaign on the risks of potential voter fraud. She was recently quoted in the voter pamphlet guide as wanting to “Increase security to ensure against possible manipulation.”

Dalton has said the state already requires a driver's license number or the last four digits of a Social Security number to verify the identity of a person registering.

As for her qualifications Dalton is confident. “For 16 years, I have done the job. I serve on numerous state-level committees that impact the rules that the Auditors must follow. As a CPA, I understand the financial functions of the office and the county.”

Lindstand has repeatedly said it is time for a change. “My qualifications and experience is extensive in the business world. Good government is within our reach when we take best business practices and insert them into a government.”
