SPOKANE, Wash. -

Incumbent Cathy McMorris Rodgers is seeking her 6th term as a representative for the 5th district of Washington in the U.S. Congress. Her challenger Joe Pakootas in his first election for public office is trailing early after initial results.

Early results show McMorris Rodgers up 59% over Pakootas who has 40% statewide.

During the primary more than 99,000 ballots were cast in Spokane County.

Joe Pakootas received 30% percent of the vote while McMorris Rodgers ran away with just over 49%. The rest of the votes were for a write in and two other candidates eliminated during the primary election.

Across the district in Eastern Washington voters chose McMorris Rodgers over Pakootas during the primary.

Pakootas currently is the CEO of the Colville tribe after serving as an elected trial council leader there for 16 years.

McMorris Rodgers is currently the highest ranking woman in the Republican party in the House Of Representatives. If reelected she will be heading in to her 10th year serving in that position.
