SPOKANE, Wash. -

Aaron Dontez Yates, better known as Tech N9ne, has been building a fan base in the Inland Northwest for years. He even mentions driving to Spokane from Billings in his song, "Like I Died," which is a reference to his tour bus getting into a wreck. The rapper is known for his thoughtful lyrics and fast rapping style.

On Halloween, he sat down with KHQ reporter Liz Burch before his show at the Knitting Factory.

Liz Burch: You're in Spokane a lot. You even sing about coming from Billings to Spokane.

Tech N9ne: Yes, it was a special day. In 2005, we almost died. Because of the wreck that we had in Billings, we could have stayed in Billings. Instead, we took a crop duster to Spokane to service all these people. They never forgot it, so it's like a bond. We'll forever come back.

LB: I read somewhere that Led Zeppelin and System of a Down are some of your influences...
T9: Yeah. I like loud and boisterous. I love loud, man. Maybe I got my cool from Jim Morrison, or Barry White. Without the Doors, there would be no Strange Music. That's why I named my label Strange, because I'm a humongous Doors fan.

LB: What's the best part about success?
T9: It's feeling like you were right, a long time ago. When everybody was like, "Maybe you should get a regular job." Because if you feel it in your heart, of course you'll push for it, but when you get there after you've pushed for it, you're like, "Wow. I played my cards correctly. That's crazy." It's crazy because you don't always do that. And there have been times when we've been knocked down, or lost money on a tour, and we think, "Man, what do we do?" Just keep on making music. Keep on going.Talk about that, share your heart with people...I started gaining fans when I tapped into emotions. There are so many people who have similar feelings. We're all connected through emotion. No matter what walk of life you come from, we all have emotions in common. So, I tapped into emotions.
