SPOKANE, Wash - Spokane police are investigating a shooting near Post Street and Montgomery Avenue in Spokane that happened late Saturday night. Police say they were investigating a stalking incident earlier in the night when they tracked down the suspect's car. Police also say the suspect was driving erratically and in a stolen car. When police caught up with the man a short chase began. Police used a pit maneuver to get the car to stop near Post and Montgomery.

A witness tells KHQ that he heard officers yelling at the man in the car to get out and and get on the ground. That witness also says it took a matter of seconds before he heard several gunshots. Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub arrived on scene but did not take any questions. He says police fired shots when the suspect tried hitting the officer with his car. The man shot by police was rushed to the hospital where police say he is in stable condition as of Saturday night. Straub says, "At one point, the suspect virtually hit one of our officers vehicles." The Spokane Investigative Regional Response team is investigating the shooting. That investigation is being led by the Washington State Patrol. No officer was hurt in the chase.
