SPOKANE, Wash. -

Students at Willard Elementary School know that it's perfectly acceptable to get a little messy sometimes, especially when it's for a good cause.

That's what 100 students did over the past few months to honor our country's veterans.

"We're painting bricks that look like flags with Honor Flight in mind," explained Kay Wright, a retired teacher from Willard who spearheads this project year after year.

Kay started having her students paint bricks after 9/11 because it was a way for them to help "rebuild the country one brick at a time."

The students each get to paint 2 bricks. They take 1 home, and they sell the other to raise money for the Honor Flight, an organization that sends veterans in the Inland Northwest to Washington DC.

Some of Kay's painters said they liked the project because it helped them learn a little bit more about the United States and what some of their grandparents did to serve our country.

Jesse Bruce, who has a daughter who attends Willard, is also a veteran. He is thankful these students are learning more about our country's heroes.

"The biggest thing is so they can understand historically, that not everything comes easy," he said. "There's people who gave everything. I'm lucky to be there, but there are people that aren't."

And, Kay promised, as long as she's able, she will continue to teach her students about the importance of the red, the white, and the blue. This year they raised $570 for the Honor Flight.

"I wear Willard on my sleeve, I will hold it in my heart forever," she said. "So I'll probably continue to do this as long as the principals let me."
