SPOKANE, Wash. -

This Veterans Day, Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Jesse Ray Drowley was honored with a memorial dedication at Fairmount Memorial Park to remember his service and dedication to our country.

Friends and family members came from as far away as Alaska and Florida to be there for the ceremony.

Sgt. Drowley received the Medal of Honor for his bravery in World War II. Drowley, Staff Sgt. 1st Battalion 132nd Infantry Regiment Americal Division was awarded the medal after he rescued fellow members of his squad after they were injured from hostile fire. He then discovered an undetected enemy pillbox and demolished it saving countless other lives.

Drowley himself was severely wounded in the chest and lost an eye during that mission. This year marks the 70th anniversary since he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Franklin Roosevelt in September of 1944.

Tim Drowley remembers his father as the strongest man he ever knew. "My dad was the hub of this family," Drowley says. "He was the stone that everyone could come to."

The Memorial was sponsored by the Americal Division and received much of its funding from the Jonas Babcock Daughters of the American Revolution, but countless others helped to make the ceremony and memorial possible.

"We wanted to do all the Medal of Honor recipients," says Susan S. Walker, Chairman of the Historical Book Committee. "It's just such an honor to bring life to these people who deserve extra credit."

The ceremony was attended by many family, friends, and fellow veterans. Some of the grandchildren of Jesse Drowley did the honors of unveiling the memorial, which will forever commemorate his patriotism.
