SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -

A burn restriction has been issued for Spokane County.

The ban is a stage one yellow ban, which means the use of non-EPA-certified wood burning stoves, fireplaces and fireplace insets is banned, and all outdoor burning is banned in Spokane County.

The temporary restriction is due to weather conditions contributing to a build-up of wood smoke. If conditions continue to deteriorate the restriction could be expanded.

If an uncertified wood burning device is the only adequate source of heat in normally inhabited areas of your home, you may use it if you obtain permission in the form of a written exemption for your device from the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency. If you need an exemption and the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency is closed, you can use use your wood burning device provided that you call the agency's main business number, 477-4727, and leave a message stating your name, home address and telephone number AND apply for an exemption on the next business day.
