SPOKANE, Wash. -

Located across from the Spokane Convention Center, the exterior construction of the Davenport Grand is almost complete. On Monday, construction crews "topped out" the hotel project by placing the last piece of precast during a special ceremony.

The enormous project broke ground late last year and now nine months later the exterior is almost finished.

"It's been a really big project," says Walt Worthy, who owns the Davenport Hotels. "We've had so many decisions to make in so many different areas."

The outside of the hotel was largely constructed from more than 4500 precast pieces, which allowed for the building to be erected so quickly.

Shad McDaniel, the foreman on the project for Precision Precast Erectors, LLC, says there are benefits to using precast pieces. "When we set the final piece, it's already been painted, windows are in, so your exterior is already done."

The hotel includes such features as a large second level terrace, 716 smart rooms, two different restaurants and even a Starbucks with a handcrafted stained glass mural.

The decor is very much the opposite of Worthy's other hotels. "It's supposed to be different," says Worthy. "We wanted to set ourselves apart from anything else in town." Worthy believes that the Davenport Grand which will be connected to the convention center via skywalk, will attract more people to Spokane.

"I think it's going to bring a lot of new people to town that have been skipping Spokane. I think we can get Spokane on more peoples' radar," says Worthy.

The Davenport Grand is projected to open in mid to late summer of 2015, but that date could get moved up.
