Rental property owned by convicted rapist condemned

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

For a couple who has struggled over the last few years, Colleen Pruitt and David Natal were excited when they moved to Spokane and got their first apartment together.

They found a listing on Craigslist and moved into the building at 1311 W. 9th Ave. in mid-July.

In less than four months they met five different property managers and had a slew of problems. According to the County Assessors Office the property is owned by Arlin Jordin, who is currently serving a rape sentence in the Washington State Penitentiary.

In late October the building was condemned by the Fire Marshall and on November 14th the tenants were given 24 hours to vacate.

David and Colleen showed us some of the problems with their unit including exposed cut wires, broken windows, an inoperable smoke alarm, and a bathtub that was visible through the roof of the front porch.

"It is a very dangerous building," says Asst. Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer. If that wasn't bad enough, Colleen and David are now temporarily staying in a local motel but can't continue to pay for a room.

"We don't know if we're going to be out on the street living or if any agency is going to be able to help us," says Pruitt.

Currently the couple has no reportable income. Colleen is in the process of getting social security for disability and is also a student. The couple's church was paying for their accommodations on W. 9th Ave until Colleen would start receiving her checks.

They tell KHQ that they are having trouble finding rental properties that will agree to that type of arrangement. "This is like the only property place that took us," says Pruitt. "Property managers don't want to accept people that don't have an income."

KHQ reached out to the Washington State Attorney General's office to find out if someone is able to run a business from prison and we are awaiting a response.

Police tell us that while they are still investigating whether the threat is credible, they do not believe the CHS that the note mentions is referring to Coeur d'Alene High School.
