SPOKANE, Wash. -

While most shoppers spent their Black Friday at big box stores, many local businesses are hoping you saved some money to shop 'small' tomorrow.

Hundreds of Spokane shops are participating in Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to supporting independent retailers and the local economy.

It's a big day for Simply Northwest, a store that's created more jobs for the holiday season.

“We need extra help with delivering our gift baskets and gifts, extra help shipping them out, creating the gifts on the retail floor,” said Denielle Waltermire-Stuhlmiller. “So we probably employ an extra 12 people around the holiday if not more.”

Denielle says it hasn't been easy running a small business in the last three years, but having her customers' support is crucial for the store's survival.

“It's a really nice feeling as a small business owner that there are people out there that are fighting for these little guys to stay here through the economy the way it's been,” said Waltermire-Stuhlmiller.

SPOKANE, Wash. - If you're near 2nd and Division in downtown Spokane, you may hear something unpleasant. It's a high pitched beeping sound coming from the nearby 7-Eleven.  "It works great sometimes in crowd dispersal applications...the military's used it...so it is a useful tool," said Officer Josh Laiva of the Spokane Police Department.
