SPOKANE, Wash. - In case the frost on your car's windshield or the visible breath coming from your mouth didn't tip you off, cold weather is here. It won't be long before the streets are covered in snow and the children of Spokane get up extra early to watch The Wake Up Show on KHQ to see if they get a day off from school.

But how does Spokane Public Schools decide if they should delay or cancel school?

Superintendent Shelley Redinger recently explained that process in a YouTube video that we have embedded in this story above, or you can read her statement here:

What is the process for determining winter school delays and closures?

It is that time of year again in Spokane, as well as in the Pacific Northwest, for snow. We do a number of things in Spokane Public Schools to keep our students and staff safe. When we have snow or ice in the forecast, we send out drivers around 3:30 to 4:30 in the morning to check the roads and the bus routes. If there are concerns, Associate Superintendent Mark Anderson and I start talking and discussing right before 5 a.m., and make a decision about a delay or a closure. We take that very seriously and want to make sure that we make the right decision.

Please note that once we make a decision, if we do close or have a delay, you will find that out on BrightArrow, our notification system for SPS families. If you have not signed up, please make sure to do that on our website or at your local school site. You can also find this information online, on Twitter and on Facebook.

And of course, as mentioned, you can also get the latest school closures on KHQ's The Wake Up Show and right here on khq.com.
