Giving back: Woman cooks hot lunch at food bank where she eats

ELK, Wash. - -

A woman in Elk, Wash., is giving back to a community that helped her for years.

We're now in the middle of the holiday season, but hunger never takes a holiday. Kassie Wheeler can certainly tell you how important food banks are year round.

Wheeler has been a client of the North County Food Pantry for about 15 years, but for the last year and a half, she's been volunteering.

The food pantry serves a hot lunch once a week, and Wheeler first offered to help when she noticed there was only one person preparing the meal.

Now, she cooks that lunch every week.

Wheeler says volunteering has taught her to be empathetic to other people's issues since she still relies on the food pantry for food.

But it's also become a way for her to do something she loves.

"Cooking is my outlet, it really helps me," Wheeler said. "But I have a hard time doing it professionally because there's too much pressure. But here I can make my own rules, I can do my own thing. And I can help people. And helping is really important to me. They always helped me when my daughter was growing up and we came here, and it's just a way to give back."

But her story doesn't stop at "just giving back."

Wheeler lost her trailer in the Riverside Trailer Park disaster back in August, and even through that loss she never missed a week of volunteering.

If you'd like to volunteer or get involved with helping hunger relief, you can call Northwest Harvest at (509) 891-7276.
