KHQ.com - Laughter is the best medicine. I'm a firm believer in that. And Jon Stewart has a way of being able to inject humor into even the most tragic of situations. But on Wednesday, after news that a Staten Island grand jury decided not to indict the NYPD officer who placed unarmed Eric Garner in a choke hold, which ultimately proved to be fatal, Stewart was left dumbfounded.

"I honestly don't know what to say," Stewart began on his nightly news show The Daily Show on Comedy Central. "If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more (expletive) time. But I would really settle for less (expletive) tragedy to be honest with you."

Stewart took a serious tone in his opening segment, comparing the New York City case to last week's Ferguson grand jury decision, which also resulted in no indictment for a white cop who killed an unarmed black man.

"None of the ambiguities that existed in the Ferguson case exist in the Staten Island case, and yet the outcome is exactly same," Stewart continued. "Here, there is none of that [ambiguity]. The coroner called it homicide, the guy's not acting threatening and we know that because we are (expletive) watching it. Someone taped it."

Footage of the confrontation this past summer between Officer Daniel Pantaleo and Garner was widely circulated on the internet. In the footage Pantaleo has Garner in a neck restraint as Garner repeatedly says, "I can't breathe." Garner later died.

"[In the Ferguson case] At least you had conflicting witness testimony, you had conflicting forensics, you had the specter at least of police self-defense," Stewart said. "Here there is none of that."

"We are definitely not living in a post-racial society." Stewart added, "and I can imagine there are a lot of people out there wondering how much of a society we're living in at all."

Segueing back into comedy, Stewart joked "So that's our show!" The segment then ended with some kittens being cute.
