LOS ANGELES, Calif. -

A massive fire broke out at a huge construction site early Monday morning in Los Angeles.

The massive structure, which was going to be a multi-story apartment building, took up about 1.3 million square feet. Firefighters were able to respond quickly because a fire station was located right across the street. It took about 250 firefighters, or about 1/4 of the LAFD's on-duty personnel to get the fire under control.

The building was a wood frame, making the fire extremely hot. That combined with the size of the fire made the blaze tough to deal with. Both sides of a freeway had to be closed in the early morning hours because firefighters feared scaffolding could collapse onto the roadway. The fire department is working with the contractor, but they have not been able to determine the cause of the fire.

"These wood frame fires are extremely hot, and talking to the firefighters from fire station three when they opened the apparatus floor doors they immediately saw the glow of the fire. And if you can imagine the size of that occupancy with two-thirds of the building on fire - it was a significant volume of fire," LAFD Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas said.

Arson investigators were brought on to the scene, but fire officials say that is standard operating procedure in this kind of fire.

Another fire broke out at a site about 7 or 8 blocks away. At this time firefighters say they have not established a connection between the two fires.
