CHENEY, Wash. -

Police say that when Jackie Doucette ran away on Thanksgiving, it wasn't the first time. But in the past she was always found or returned home before too long. They say there are several reasons why this particular case became as big as it did.

Sgt. Rick Beghtol, who worked on Jackie's case says because of the fact that she was a special needs child with cognitive functioning issues and emotional issues that require medication, and had never been missing for that long before made it more imperative for her to be found. Below freezing temperatures only made matters worse.

"When she didn't show up for school it became evident that she probably needed a little more help than what we had available to us," Beghtol said.

The Cheney Police Department reached out to the Missing and Exploited Children's Clearing House and the case went national.

Then, the Federal Bureau of Investigation became involved.

"They have resources that we just don't have and their offer to help with the investigation was more than welcome," Beghtol said.

A source close to the FBI told us they became involved due to the length of time Jackie was gone and the circumstances in which she vanished. The source also says it's becoming more common for the agency to get involved in missing children investigations.

To escalate things further, Jackie's picture was plastered all over social media after her family created a Facebook paged and it was shared repeatedly.

"It was social media that really drove this to the point where it ultimately got all the people on board to come out and help," says Beghtol.

On Saturday a search party went out looking for the 15 year old, and on Sunday morning Jackie showed up in her front yard. There are still questions surrounding the case, though. The biggest being just where she was for 10 days.

"That's the million dollar question. We're not entirely sure where she was. We're still looking into that."
