The '6th man' on Gonzaga's bench

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

For the past couple of years, there has been a priest sitting on the bench of the Gonzaga Men's Basketball games.

This year has been different. There hasn't been a priest there all year.

That's because the basketball chaplain last year, Fr. Jack Bentz, transferred from Spokane and now works in Boise. The University hadn't found a new chaplain until just recently.

Fr. Frank Case will be the new chaplain on the bench this year, and he is excited to be the symbol of the mission of the school.

"This image goes out to the world. And people used to ask who is Gonzaga, now they know. It's nice to know now it's a Catholic Jesuit school," Case said.

He said his job is pretty easy, he goes to the games, and leaves when they are done. But the most important part is behind the scenes.

"A lot of support and a lot of prayer over the rest of the season," Case said.

And it's a big first game: WSU vs. Gonzaga. There has been quite a lot of turnover with this job, three different priests in three years, but that might all end with Fr. Case.

"It might be as long as this old body holds up," Case said.
