KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho -

On Dec. 10 just before 2:30 p.m., the Kootenai County Sheriff's office received a call of a downed plane just off of highway 95 South.

When authorities arrived on scene they found 80-year-old pilot Ron Tacheney had broken the landing gear of his plane after landing on his private runway just behind his house. Tacheney walked away from the rough landing unscathed, just a little embarrassed.

"I've landed on that runway hundreds of times," says Tacheney.

The plane he'd been flying was a small bi-plane that he'd built just 10 years earlier.

"I built every part of that plane, except the engine and a few other things," Tacheney says with a big grin.

This is the second plane he's built in a flying career that spans more than 40 years. He built his first plane when he was just 30 years old.

"People say you must have a lot of patience to build a plan," Tacheney laughs. "I always tell them I have no patience, if I did I'd never finish building it."

The airplane aficionado tells KHQ he got into airplanes when he was a kid growing up during World War II. Drawing pictures of dogfights and looking at old newsreels of German airplanes.

Retired and a lifetime behind him of just flying for fun, he says he plans on staying among the clouds for as long as he can.

"As long as I have fun while I'm doing it, so I guess I'm doing pretty well for now," sad Tacheney.
