Local family raises awareness about jaundice

SPOKANE, Wash. -

It's always busy inside the Thomas family residence with two parents chasing three energetic children. But the scene looked quite different six years ago when their son Chace had to be rushed to the hospital just days after he was born.

"We were shocked," Katie Thomas, Chace's mother, said. "We had just had a healthy baby a couple days ago and now he was dying."

It turned out Chace has infant jaundice, which caused high levels of biliruben in his body. A blood transfusion saved his life, but his family was forever changed.
Chace now lives with Cerebral Palsy, brain damage, and major hearing loss. His toes are deformed, and his conditions cause him to bang his head against the wall as he sleeps.

"He's not going to have the life he was supposed to have," Katie Thomas said.
Six years later, his parents still believe a simple treatment could have prevented this.

"If they had kept us there one more day, none of this would have happened," Corey Thomas, Chace's father, said.

"All that needed to be done was to put him under the lights," Katie added.

The family sued the hospital but lost the suit after a 4 week trial.
"He didn't get any justice," Corey Thomas said. "What we're trying to do now is spread the word about jaundice and hopefully we'll save another child someday."
