Holiday scams to watch out for

SPOKANE, Wash. -

Scammers are active year-round, but experts warn that they go into overdrive during the holidays when people are stressed and distracted. It's good to get in the holiday spirit of giving, but make sure your money is going to people in need and not scammers. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) says some things to watch out for are online shopping scams, identity theft at crowded malls, and bogus charity organizations.

Chelsea Maguire, the Director of Communications for Spokane's BBB, says since a lot of holiday shopping is done online now, scammers are making much of their theft digital. Don't trust websites you don't know. You can verify that a company is real by looking for its physical address.

It isn't just Christmas shoppers that are being targeted. Maguire says fake charities are pulling on people's heartstrings, and picking their digital pockets. Before donating, make sure the foundation is real.

Here is the BBB's complete list of holiday scams: http://www.bbb.org/stlouis/news-events/news-releases/2014/11/bbb-lists-five-holiday-scams-to-avoid/
