Spokane Valley 'Christmas-a-holics' take decorating to the next level

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

It's tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood in Spokane Valley, but there's nothing subtle about this family's Christmas display.

Melanie Goeller has been celebrating her love of Christmas since she was 8 years old. For more than four decades she has been meticulous about decorating every inch of her home when it comes time for the winter holiday.

"I think I'm a Christmas-a-holic," says Melanie.

With 112 decorated, lighted trees, special Christmas dishes, countless snowmen and much, much more, the Goellers have the self-proclaimed "best Christmas house in the world."

Melanie's passion began when she was just a little girl. "I just love lights. The neighbors had the aluminum tree and I loved it. It was magical to me," says Goeller.

What was magical for her as a child became her passion as an adult. She begins decorating the inside of the house the day after Halloween and it's a project that takes several weeks. She and Rob have so many boxes of Christmas decorations that it actually looks like they are moving when they get them out.

"We have trouble finding people to volunteer to help," says Rob. "Once they do it one time, they never volunteer again. It's like asking someone to help you move."

The other crazy part about all this is the expense. "Our electric bill jumps by about $600," says Melanie. "It skyrockets."

I suppose the good news is there is no need for the Goellers to use their heat during the holiday season. They say with the amount of lights in their house at this time of year, that sometimes it's downright hot.

It isn't only the inside of the house that is decorated the outside boast quite a display as well. That, however is Rob's territory.

Despite the added expense and all the extra work, Melanie and Rob say they do it for the smiles that it brings to peoples' face, especially children and for the magical feel it creates during the holiday season.

They do have their display up until right after the New Year. If you'd like to visit it is located at 13002 E. Semro Ave. Spokane Valley.
