MT. SPOKANE -

With Mount Spokane open, many avid skiers and snowboarders spent their Christmas on the slopes.

The park usually tries to be open for Thanksgiving weekend, but the lack of snow delayed opening day by about a month.

"All those folks that we hired in November, we did lose a handful that just couldn't wait until we got open," said Manager Brad McQuarrie.

Despite the setback, McQuarrie remains optimistic.

"I'm confident that from this point on we're going to have a great season. We've got a lot of people coming out an enjoying themselves so it's all good," said McQuarrie.

In November, Mount Spokane got approval for a project that would expand the ski area by about 279 acres. A new lift and seven runs will be added.

"We're into the permitting phase and working through permits and hope to start construction this summer," said McQuarrie.

McQuarrie says he hopes the park will stay open through spring break: April 2015.
