Tire tips for slick, snow-covered roads

SPOKANE, Wash. -

If you're driving during this holiday season and find your car slipping and sliding on the road, you may want to check out your tires.

As the temperatures drop, so does the air pressure in your tires. Checking out the tread on your tires could also make huge difference if you're skidding on the road.

"Often times it's lack of tread on the tires. You don't even realize it on dry pavement, but you could be driving on bald tires. And as soon as you have a little bit of water, snow or ice underneath that you're sliding all over the place," said Tire Store Assistant Manager William Beernink.

When the tire's tread is completely worn down, you're driving on what are known as bald tires. Bald tires increase the risk of a crash, especially in bad weather. Experts say one out of every ten cars on the road has at least one bald tire.

"Everybody's heard the penny trick, put a penny in the tire and if it reaches Lincoln's head and goes past it you're OK, if it's underneath then you want to get new tires," said Beernink.

SPOKANE, Wash. - It's been nearly one week since Washington voters passed Initiative 1639, a sweeping package of stricter gun regulations - particularly for semiautomatic rifles. While the measure raises the minimum age to purchase semiautomatic rifles to 21, creates enhanced background checks, and forces customers to wait 10 days before taking possession of the firearm, I-1639 lays the framework for "safe storage" of semiautomatic rifles
