Conceal and carry 'very common' in Kootenai County

Posted: Updated:
KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho -

In the wake of the accidental shooting death of 29-year-old Veronica Rutledge, KHQ spoke with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office on how common having a conceal and carry permit is in the county.

"It is very common for folks around here to carry weapons," Lt. Stu Miller says.

Lieutenant Miller says conceal and carry is very much a part of the Kootenai County culture.

"The sheriff's office here has issued a total of about 16,000 conceal weapons permits that are outstanding right now," Lt. Miller says.

With about 160,000, that would mean about 10 percent of the county had a conceal and carry permit. But Lt. Miller says many have the permit in Kootenai County and live out of state.

"More states recongnize that permit and if you live in Idaho, a Washington permit you can use it in Idaho. The Washington permit you can use in a lot more states than for Idaho's standard permit," Lt. Miller says.

29-year-old Veronica Rutledge had a permit to conceal and carry in Washington. She was shopping at the Hayden, ID Walmart with her family when her two-year-old son reached into her purse, grabbed her handgun and accidentally shot and killed her.

"It's not something you ever want to see. You don't want to see a two-year-old that has no idea where mom went," Lt. Miller says.
