Group takes frigid dip to help girl in need

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

Ice clings to the shore of Hayden beach as a group of more than thirty people run gleefully into the water. They cheer and shout and some even cry out because of the frigid temperature. Their January dip doesn't last very long, but some participants walk out of the water, steam rolling off their shoulders, carrying chunks of ice as souvenirs.

"There's no better way to start your year than to help others in need," says Dan Bichler as he towels off and changes into warmer clothes.

The frigid water may look inviting to some, the real reason behind the plunge is a six year old Coeur d'Alene girl named Serina Robles. A little more than one year ago, Serina was diagnosed with Leukemia.

"As a father, I was really speechless," says Serina's father, Ray Robles describing his thoughts when he heard his daughter had been diagnosed with this life-threatening illness. "I was shocked and it was hard, really was."

Through an organization called "Punks For A Princess" this polar plunge is set to raise $3,000 to go toward the Make-A-Wish Foundation to grant Serina's wish to go to Disney World.

"I can be cold for a little bit to help someone so sweet as Serina," says Bichler.

For the family, the community has come together in an extraordinary way to lend a helping hand to their daughter who is in the process of an uphill battle.

"You know, I think the fact that the community doesn't even know my daughter, and you know, they're doing this. It's touching," says Robles.
