Idaho road crews tackle snow

It was no blizzard, but the on-and-off snow seen throughout the Inland Northwest had all Idaho Department of Transportation crews across the five northern counties of working non-stop.

"Every day has it's deal, you know," says Cody Kraack, a snow plow driver who's been clearing the mountain passes near 4th of July Pass for six years.

Kraack says the snow throughout the day hasn't been bad, but every weather event brings its own set of challenges. Today, while the air temperature may not be very cold, the road is. Low ground temperature means salt won't work and snow clings to the surface of the road.

"Just means you have to work a little harder to scrape it off," says Kraack.

With ice and snow still in the mountain passes, this can create hazardous driving conditions for other drivers and the snow plows as well.

"Cars will spin out, things like that. It'll definitely keep you on your toes," says Kraack.

Despite the treacherous conditions, Kraack says he'll take the twists and turns of the mountains passes over the congestion of city traffic, no matter how much it's snowing.
