COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

Memories.

This was the message during Veronica Rutledge's funeral service today in Coeur d'Alene. The service was held at the St. Thomas Catholic Church on Indiana Ave at 10:30 and nearly 100 people, family and friends, were in attendance.

Taken far too young, 29-year-old Rutledge was killed on December 30, 2014 while she was shopping at Walmart in Hayden, ID. Her death came not only as a shock to her family but to the community as well, sparking numerous memorial pages and national support on Facebook.

Dirk Hendricks, Rutledge's second oldest brother says his time with his sister was brief, but memorable. He recalled stories, telling those unfamiliar that Rutledge was most at home when she was outdoors. He also says Rutledge was the smartest person he knew. Rutledge graduated from North Idaho College in 2010 with a double major in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Those degrees would land Rutledge a job as a nuclear research scientist at for Idaho National Laboratories in Blackfoot, ID where she, her husband, and their 2-year-old son lived.

Living away from family didn't stop Rutledge from participating in weekend excursions to the St.Joe National Forest where they would hunt, fish and spend time together. Hendricks says he wished he would have gone to the most recent trip, but says his sister would not want him to think about what could have been, rather cherish what was.

Rutledge will be buried in Spirit Lake. A number of memorial funds have been set up to help the family pay for the funeral service.

Donations can be made online to the The Veronica Rutledge Give Forward Memorial Fund. More than $6,000 has been raised so far. The page can be accessed here: https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/bf57

There are places to make cash donations, the Albertsons and U.S. Bank in Hayden, ID. There is also a college fund being set up for her son.

SPOKANE, Wash. - It's been nearly one week since Washington voters passed Initiative 1639, a sweeping package of stricter gun regulations - particularly for semiautomatic rifles. While the measure raises the minimum age to purchase semiautomatic rifles to 21, creates enhanced background checks, and forces customers to wait 10 days before taking possession of the firearm, I-1639 lays the framework for "safe storage" of semiautomatic rifles
