SPOKANE, Wash. -

Spokane lawmakers Michael Baumgartner and Marcus Riccelli both introduced bills Wednesday that could bring Washington State University one step closer to making a brand new medical school a reality.

The bills seek to overturn two major barriers preventing WSU from moving forward with their project, and both lawmakers say they've seen strong bipartisan support for change.

Firstly, Senate Bill 5487 and House Bill 1559 aim to overturn a 1917 restriction that gives the University of Washington the exclusive right to teach medical students in the state of Washington.

Secondly, they hope to raise the state cap size for medical school, which sits at 120 students as of now. According to a release from Sen. Baumgartner and Rep. Riccelli, Washington would need space for 440 students per year in order to reach the national average for med-school students per capita.

Both lawmakers say they're off to an auspicious start with 60 signatures already on the House bill, and 17 on the Senate bill.

“I am pleased but not at all surprised by the strong support for this bill,” Baumgartner said.

The bills will go to committee in the coming months, and if they garner enough support, they could reach the floor of the state house and senate later in the year.

A spokesman for Rep. Riccelli says the biggest hurdle after that would be finding funding for WSU's new medical school.
